Course Description
What is anthrax, why is it a terrorist agent, how can it be detected, who is at risk, when has it been used, where can I go for information? These and other questions surrounding Bacillus anthracis and the infection it causes are addressed in the Anthrax Module. Included is a virtual laboratory exercise to introduce sampling protocols.

Course Outline
- Identify the physical characteristics that make Bacillus anthrasis an ideal organism for use as an agent of bioterrorism.
- Differentiate between cutaneous and inhalation forms of anthrax by identifying routes of entry, disease progression, treatment and mortality rates.
- Discuss the initial ramifications of an undisclosed anthrax event focusing on effective diagnosis and treatment.
- Describe the concept of weaponization as it applies to anthrax and the efficacy of the choice of dispersal mode.
- Apply the appropriate response, containment, decontamination and personal protection measures to a given bioterrorism event involving anthrax.
- Recognize the effect a bioterrorism event involving anthrax may have on a community.
- Comprehend the reasoning for sampling protocol based characteristics of contaminant form.
- Collect a sample to be analyzed for Bacillus anthrasis using appropriate sampling equipment and protocol when given a specific contamination scenario.
- Secure, package, and select the appropriate laboratory facility to analyze a sample suspected to be contaminated with Bacillus anthrasis.
- Compare and contrast the two primary rapid screening devices available for on-site anthrax determinations.
